April Update from Loose Threads

I really did intend to keep updating my blog, but time just seems to be flying by.   My last post had photos from the fall Jane Stickle retreat in Shipshewana, and I'm heading to the spring retreat early next week.

This photo is from my newest pattern called All American.   I love making Dresden plate blocks.   I hate to tell you how long I had the Easy Dresden ruler before I ever took it out of the package, but it was a really long time.   These Dresden plates are made using a Creative Grids 30 degree ruler.   You sew ...

Curvy Seven Sisters from Quilt Obsession

I know, I know – it has been a very long time since I blogged. I don’t even want to think about how long it has been. Lots has been going on, but I just haven’t blogged. I’m going to try, once again, to get back to blogging on a somewhat regular basis.

At Christmas a friend gave me a huge set of markers and an adult colouring book. I was hooked immediately! Since then I’ve progressed to coloured pencils and have found that I’m drawn mostly to colouring books that involve floral designs. Big surprise ...

Rainbow Forest OBW #90 from If These Threads Could Talk

Rainbow Forest by Alexander Henry

I saw this fabric by Alexander Henry and just had to have it. It is a large print with a 24″ repeat and is full of vibrant colors. I knew I want to add a large star constructed from Star 60 & Quad 60 units.

I made 3″ finished Quad 60 and Star 60 units.

I thought I would incorporate this 12″ hexagon into my design as is.

But, I decided to add points turning it into a 24″ star by adding 6″ finished Quad 60’s for the points.

The photo’s above show how ...

Celestial Journey – OBW # 88 from If These Threads Could Talk

I love Josephine Wall’s art, her fabric panels are glorious. They make spectacular One Block Wonders.

Celestial Journey panel measures 35″ x 43″

These panels must have been either the beginning of the run or the last. The outer edges were off be about 1/2″. I focused on aligning the panels around the unicorn. The outer edges were mostly space so it was not crucial they be perfectly aligned. I cut my strips 3.75″ by WOF.

Celestial Journey, 76″ x 100″

I wanted to give my travelers a destination. I created a nearby galaxy for them consisting ...

New Patterns and Some Stitching from Loose Threads

I've been busy doing a lot of sewing the past couple of weeks.  I enjoy pattern writing and explaining how to sew things step by step.  I made this quilt in different fabrics a couple of years ago and wrote a rough draft of the pattern then.  A few weeks ago I decided to remake the quilt in Lori Holt fabrics and double check the pattern draft I wrote.   The result is the quilt below called Dresden Blossoms.   You can purchase the pattern in my Etsy shop LuAnnsLooseThreads.
I'm still cross stitching a lot and have a lot ...

Spirit of Flight – OBW #86 from If These Threads Could Talk

One day, several months ago I received a text from my sister Marti in Arizona. She frantically wanted to know how panels were needed for a One Block Wonder (OBW). I quickly answered “7” panels were needed. I thought she must have a found a fabulous panel to work with. Then about a week later I a received a package from Marti.

Spirit of Flight by Josephine Wall

Marti had sent me 7 panels by Josephine Wall & 3 Wishes. I was obsessed and couldn’t wait to make this panel into a OBW. Marti said this would be me when ...

Hexagon of Hexagons from Quilt Obsession

This is another of the projects I’ve been working on – a hexagon of hexagons. Right now it’s a hexagon but it will evolve into something else. I haven’t got anything specifically planned — yet. So I’ll just keep adding rounds until it gets to a certain size and then decide where to go with it next. As of right now it measures 11.5″from top to bottom and 13″ from side to side.

The back of it after grading the seams and pressing. With this many tiny pieces, grading the seams will make a huge difference ...

Rainbow Kitty OBW #82 & the Star 60 Tool from If These Threads Could Talk

The official name for this quilt is Samantha’s Rainbow Kitty. This quilt was made with love for my Granddaughter Sam. It was supposed to be finished for Christmas but it is in time for my special Valentine.

Panel by Chong-A-Hwang for Timeless Treasures

Why did I choose 5.5″ Finished Hexagons?

This panel measured 23 inches wide. I chose 5.5″ (Cut my strips 3.5″) finished hexies because 4 X 5.5 = 22″. Now I only have trim 1/2″ from both sides and my hexies will fit along the bottom and the top of the panel.

Checkerboard ...

I’m Repeating Myself Again – OBW #80 from If These Threads Could Talk

What is a One Block Wonder (OBW)? I bought Maxine Rosenthal’s book “One Block Wonders” in 2006 and was totally awestruck! So much so, that I have made 79 hexagon OBW’s since. Whether you are making hexagons or octagons your are creating kaleidoscope blocks – each one unique by using one fabric, one shape for one of kind quilts! With hexagon OBW’s you cut 6 identical repeats and with octagon OBW’s you cut 8 identical repeats.

Octagons are used in the cover photo.

In 2007 I bought Alexander Henry’s fabulous fabric “Lion Eyes”. I always buy ...

The Road to OZ – OBW #78 from If These Threads Could Talk

I love the Wizard of Oz! I know it is a very controversial movie, either you love it or hate it! In 2008 Quilting Treasures came out with the Wizard of Oz fabric line. The first fabrics were in sepia tones. I have made many, many Wizard of Oz quilts from my extensive Wizard of Oz fabric stash. This Road to Oz is for me!

I used Studio 180 Design’s Star 60 Tool to enhance my One Block Wonder. Aside from cutting the equilateral triangles I will share how to cut Whole Hexagons, Half Hexagons and make a Half ...

Ruca the Technicolor Cat – OBW #77 from If These Threads Could Talk

Last January I had the great joy of meeting my half sister Marti for the first time. I also acquired many new family members.

When I saw this panel by Chong-A Hwang for Timeless Treasures, I knew I had to make a One Block Wonder for my Great Niece Alexa. Alexa has a wonderful cat named “Ruca”, whom she has had since she was in college. I met Ruca, a very special cat.

Even though this panel states it measures 24″ by 44″, by the time I cut apart the panels and squared it up, it was more like 23 ...

Friends at the Fence... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Look what's up on the Design Wall...

I have had this panel for close to a year now...

I put it up on the design wall...

then waited for inspiration to set in.

English Paper Pieced Hexagons...

on the table

Now, I am inspired !

Here goes...

The sky has a very soft pink

running through it...

I pinned up the light blue and pink hexagons

 along the sky.

At this point, the sky is blocked in

with blue hexagons.

I have started on the lower portion...

blacks, browns, rusts

to go with the horse colors.

I am getting goose ...

Go BIG.........or Go HOME from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I haven't had much time with my

sewing machine out in the Thread Shed

 since calving season began

in February...

I have been hand piecing in the evenings...

English Paper Piecing

Just so you can get an idea of the size of these

paper pieced flowers:

Each hexagon petal is

nearly the size of my hand !

Go BIG.....or Go HOME !

These piece together fairly quickly...

I can stitch together 5 or 6 in an evening.

I have 13 done so far...

Not sure what I will do with them?

For now, I just enjoy looking at these BIG ...

Hexagon Table Runner......#3 from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

English Paper Pieced.....Hexagons

I enjoy a hand piecing project when we travel,

so I am putting together a

take-a-long table runner.

After all of the paper hexagons are covered with

fabric, I put down a white piece of fabric and

arrange the table runner...

This is my third table runner,

and I still enjoy the process.

The pieces are all arranged,

but not sewn together just yet...

I pin each hexagon to the fabric base.

They will live on this fabric until they

are hand pieced together.

The fabric will not remain under the hexagons.

Once they are all ...
